I created this rule to account for the fact that a Forgotten Realms archmage, the Simbul, is capable of creating or modifying at least one spell every day, and lacking the need for sleep didn't do the trick alone. To my surprise, a fairly reasonable rule came out, so I decided to let it into my own campaign. Maybe this is more a rule for DMs than for players. I for one have never had a player character that would benefit from this rule, but who knows, it is certainly possible.

Given periods are multiplied by the researched spell's spell-level. On a missed learn spells check, one unit of the given period is added to the research time. For priests, the same table is used, but instead of intelligence, Wisdom is used to determine the research time.
